With Cancer Research UK as its charity of the year, Quill is currently holding an aptly named Quillathlon charity fundraiser. As the name suggests, Quill employees are running, swimming, cycling and walking virtually to its furthest-away client which is Falklands Legal located at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. As Quill’s head office is based in Manchester, the total distance between the start and end points is 7,940 miles.

Using a mixture of exercise bikes and treadmills in its regional sites, and combining with walks and cycles on the commute to and from work, and including any lunchtime, evening and weekend activities, Quill aims to complete the ambitiously long route between 7th September and 27th September. The end date coincides with the Macmillan Cancer Support World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, an annual event on Quill’s fundraising calendar and a charity closely related to Cancer Research UK.

While Quill fully appreciates the challenge it’s set itself, the task has been made slightly easier by allowing friends and family to get involved too. Mileage logged by Quill employees also applies to other participants. And everything counts, even a walk around a shopping centre.

Unsurprisingly for a software provider, Quill’s utilising technology to assist the tracking process where possible. Fitbits, mobile phone apps, and journeys calculated on cycling and running machines are all being used. To make sure every entry is legitimate, Quill’s asking for photographic evidence using the hashtag #quillathlon on social media.

Julian Bryan, Quill’s Managing Director, comments: “We probably don’t have to think very long or very far through our network of friends and relatives to zone in on loved ones who’ve been ill with cancer. The Quill team is no exception and we’ve been saddened to see colleagues or their family members undergo treatment and surgery in recent months.

“That’s why our charity committee has decided to do something different to raise both awareness and money for Cancer Research UK. We’re making good headway clocking up miles on the bikes and treadmills in our offices, and miles on outdoor pursuits.

“Clients and suppliers are very much part of the Quill community whom we treat with the same warm relationships as our own employees. Everyone is cordially invited to support our Quillathlon by popping into one of our offices and doing a stint on a machine or by making a donation for this worthy cause.”
